US Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA)

Website: www.amsaa.army.mil

The US Army Transformation strategy for logistics prescribes a CBM Policy that will virtually eliminate scheduled maintenance, predict the remaining useful life of line replaceable units and allow maintainers to more accurately diagnose subsystem failures. This paper will describe how AMSAA is attacking CBM and using Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS). AMSAA expanded a field instrumentation program on tactical wheeled vehicles as well as research and development tests to attack the CBM initiative head-on. AMSAA's engineers took this technology and adapted and ruggedized it for use in the most austere environments. The hardware includes external and internal sensors, such as, a motion pack, accelerometers, vehicle databus, and GPS. AMSAA used this hardware to develop field data across the globe in multiple terrains, climates, and usage scenarios. AMSAA provides direct feedback to the user, maintainer, Program Manager, and decision maker by analyzing the usage data. As more time is spent analyzing data, AMSAA continues to refine algorithms that will eventually lead to diagnostic and prognostic capabilities on board the Army’s Tactical Wheeled Vehicle fleet. The knowledge gained from these analyses and data collection will prove essential to a CBM Policy. AMSAA is still using this data acquisition device as an engineering developmental tool until a sufficient amount of usage, diagnostic and prognostic algorithms can be developed and implemented on future data acquisition devices. AMSAA has also been developing and started initial fielding a future data acquisition device. AMSAA has chosen a miniature cost efficient commercial off the shelf (COTS) system as a way to produce concise usage and health reports on a larger fleet of vehicles. The system development has been in conjunction with COTS manufacturer according to CBM requirements. AMSAA has worked over the two years to develop, test, and integrate the system onto the Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Fleet. In addition to hardware system development, AMSAA has been working on developing algorithms, data processing techniques, and usage summaries This case study will cover the system development of the engineering acquisition system as well as the focused CBM system. The paper will include challenges, benefits, lessons learned and roadmap of where AMSAA is taking CBM.
